Metal Working Fluids
Metalworking Fluids
Metalworking fluids, lubricants and coolants are typically neat oils, water soluble oils, synthetics and other specialty fluids. They are used in metal component manufacturing processes such as machining, boring, stamping, grinding and cutting to increase lubrication. The fluid is designed to reduce wear and thermal deformation (cool), improve surface finish and flush away chips from the cutting zone. They are also formulated to prevent rust and corrosion and act as release agents to prevent materials from sticking or adhering to an underlying surface
The metalworking fluid is therefore a vital part of the manufacturing process and maintaining the fluid in good order will return benefits in product performance, manufacturing quality and reduced waste disposal costs. Metalworking fluids are tested for contamination by tramp oil, swarf (metallic cuttings from the machining process), acid build up, incompatible fluids and to measure additive concentrations. In the case of water-soluble oils, water and oil mixture regular monitoring controls unwanted microbial growth and maintains a healthy workplace.
